The Founding of Outer Banks Coastal Conservation

Nestled along the windswept barrier islands of North Carolina, the Outer Banks is a region of breathtaking natural beauty and ecological significance. But amid its pristine beaches, fragile dunes, and teeming wildlife lies a growing challenge: how to protect this unique coastal ecosystem.

Recognizing this urgent need, a group individual advocates came together in 2025 to form Outer Banks Coastal Conservation (OBCC)—a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the public and inspiring environmental stewardship throughout the Outer Banks. OBCC was founded on the belief that protecting the environment begins with awareness, and that every visitor and resident can play a role in preserving the coast.

Why Coastal Conservation Matters

The Outer Banks draws millions of visitors each year, many of whom are unaware of the delicate ecosystems they are stepping into. From nesting sea turtles and shorebirds to native dune plants and endangered species, the region supports a rich diversity of life. Yet, the very popularity of these beaches poses a threat to the habitats and wildlife that depend on them.

OBCC exists to bridge the gap between enjoyment and education. Through interpretive signage, school outreach, education resources, and volunteer-led conservation efforts, the organization brings conservation messages directly to those who need them most—beachgoers, families, students, and outdoor enthusiasts.

By placing educational signs at key access points, offering nature-based learning opportunities, and collaborating with local parks and partners, OBCC makes environmental awareness an everyday experience in the Outer Banks. Whether through educating children about sea turtle nesting seasons, encouraging visitors to restore the beach after use, or prthoting principles of sustainable tourism, OBCC fosters a shared sense of responsibility for preserving the natural beauty of the Outer Banks.
